PhotoJ - News Values

  1. Timeliness  -- the newness of the facts.
    1. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/03/02/pediatricians-agree-delay-vaccines/24258065/
    2. Majority of pediatricians agree to delay vaccines
      1. I think this article fits to timeliness because it just got released today and the topic is really up to date. It also has been in the news a lot lately.
  2.  Proximity – the nearness of a given event to your place of publication.
    1. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/01/attorney-ebola-nurse-suing-texas-hospital-for-negligence/24231015/
    2. Ebola nurse to sue for negligence
      1. This article is a good example of proximity because clearly the place where it's happening is really close (Dallas). It is not only the same country, it is also the same state.
  3.  Prominence – the “newsworthiness” of an individual, organization or place.
    1. http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2015/03/02/obama-south-carolina-utah-south-dakota-48th-state-benedict-college/24252901/
    2. Obama to visit the 48th state: South Carolina
      1. You can see prominence here because Obama is the president of the US and therefore really important for the citizens. As president he's clearly a politician what makes him also very prominent.
  4.  Impact – the effect or consequence of an event on the audience.
    1. http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ODE/AustinAmericanStatesmanNIE/
    2. Austin steps up, makes SXSW safer
      1. This article is a perfect example for impact because SXSW is basically right in our neighborhood and with it the danger of drunken idiots or something disturbing like that. Also I assume that almost everyone in hear has been so SXSW at least once.
  5.  Conflict – the meeting of two or more opposing forces. These forces can be physical, emotional or philosophical.
    1. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/25/911-fbi-investigation/70423820/
    2. 9/11 investigation still open; disagreement persists
      1. This article displays a conflict because it's talking about how people in the FBI disagree with each other. They're arguing about wether others in the US have the advantage of knowing of secret plans etc.
  6.  Human Interest – the drama the surrounds people involved in an emotional struggle.
    1. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/26/world/europe/germanwings-airbus-crash.html?ref=world&_r=0
    2. Germanwings Crash Investigation Hits Snag in Retrieving Data
      1. I think there is no question why this is an example for human interest. I mean it is clearly a drama which "surrounds people involved in an emotional struggle" when there are 150 deaths and no survivors because of a plane crash.
  7.  Novelty – the attraction people have to unusual things and events.
    1. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/25/detroit-bodies-found-freezer/70419644/
    2. Mom reportedly told police she killed kids in freezer
      1. This is definitely a topic in my opinion which attracts people because it is really, really unusual, clearly. Unfortunately people are most likely interested in something like that.
